"What you Want to Know About Newborn Portrait Sessions"

This is my fourth and final blog in the series entitled:

"How to Prepare for my Newborn Portrait Session”

A few questions parents have before their newborn session are, “what do I need to bring” or “do I feed my baby before”.  I certainly understand that this can be a very stressful time for parents of newborns.  That is why I want to make your session as simple and relaxing as possible.  I hope this blog will help you to be confident that having a newborn session will not add to your stress and will give you some beautiful images of your baby that you can treasure forever!

Your newborn session will last approximately 2-3 hours.  I understand that little ones may need extra time for feeding, changing or just cuddling.  I allow a flexible session time to work with your little one to be sure we get just the right photos!  If you are going to add parents and/or siblings to your session, you may need to allow an extra 30 minutes.

Here are a few tips that can make your session go smoothly:

  • Newborn sessions are best during baby’s first week.  They are still very sleepy and can be posed easily.  When we book your session, we will discuss the best time for your session.  We will talk about any special needs of your newborn, any feeding or sleeping habits, etc.  I normally suggest that you feed your baby just before getting in car to come to the studio.   If possible, it is recommended that the baby not take a long nap prior to coming.  I do ask to dress your baby in an outfit that does not require being pulled over their head.  This makes it less likely to disturb a sleeping baby right before our session.
  • Things for you to bring:  bottle of formula, (If you are breast feeding, we can discuss alternatives when you book your session), pacifier, diapers, and an extra change of clothes.  Most parents find it easier to bring their baby in their car seat since most are sleeping when you arrive.
  • What should mom and dad wear?  I suggest solid colors.  Black or neutral colors work very well.  Try to coordinate your colors.   I suggest mom wear a strapless shirt (a camisole will work as we can tuck straps in.)  If desired, dad can pose shirtless.  I recommend bringing an extra shirt since baby may not be wearing a diaper during this portion of session and accidents can happen!  J  If you have questions about what to wear, I will be more than happy to discuss with you in more detail before your session.
  • NEW TO MY NEWBORN & MATERNITY SESSIONS!!!  Something new I have added is the option for moms to have their hair and make up done in my studio, pending availability.  Mom will simply come with clean hair and face.  We do ask that you bring your own foundation to be sure of a perfect skin match.  Everything else is provided.  This is a great way for mom to have some extra pampering to make her day more relaxing and enjoyable.  This option has a minimal charge of $40.
  • Studio will be very warm to make baby comfortable.  I keep the studio warm so your baby will be comfortable while undressing and during posing.  You may want to dress in layers so you can be more comfortable.   I will have a fan available for parents in the relaxation area.
  • Please bring two small blankets (receiving blankets work well) to wrap baby in between poses.  I will have extra ones available as needed.
  • Optional items you can bring:   If you have a special outfit you would like to have baby wear for a pose, or a special toy or stuffed animal you would like to incorporate in a pose.  I know some parents may have a special theme or prop that you would like to incorporate in your session.   I am more than happy to try and accommodate your request.  However, please let me know prior to session so I can plan accordingly.
  • Even though you are welcome to bring a personal prop or outfit to our session, it is not necessary.  I have a wide variety of props, hats, bows and wraps available to use for your session.   When you book your newborn session, we will discuss any request you have regarding color scheme that you would like to match your home décor.

My newborn sessions take place in my home studio.  It is set up specifically with newborns in mind.  I have a changing table with extra diapers, wipes, blankets, etc.

I also have a relaxation area for parents to enjoy.  This area has snacks, cold drinks and a tv so parents can sit back and be stress free during our session.

Newborn photography is my passion.  I simply love the opportunity to have your little bundle of joy captured in adorable poses that you will want to share and display in your home.

I hope this series has been helpful and educational to you as a new or expectant parent.  I hope you will consider contacting me to discuss scheduling your newborn portrait session.

Also, consider scheduling a maternity session.   Expectant women have a special glow and beauty that you will want to capture in a beautiful image that you can show your future child how mommie looked when they were in your tummy!
